Coupling, Towball Weight & Safety Chains
A loaded car trailer is a heavy, high-value combination — the coupling is the one point everything else depends on.
Coupling Types
- 50mm ball hitch — approved for trailers up to 3,500kg ATM
- Pintle hook — approved for trailers up to 4,500kg ATM
Given how easily a loaded car trailer reaches the upper end of these brackets, matching coupling type to actual loaded ATM (not just trailer tare) matters more here than on lighter trailer types. Whatever the type, it must be quick-release (no tools) and rated to at least the full loaded weight.
Towball / Coupling Weight
General Australian guidance sits in an 8–12% of ATM range as the stable towing "sweet spot." On a heavily loaded car trailer this can be a substantial absolute weight — always defer to whichever of the vehicle, tow bar, coupling or hitch has the lowest rating, since that component sets the real ceiling regardless of the percentage the trailer was designed around.
Safety Chains
| Loaded ATM | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Up to 2,500kg | At least one safety chain complying with AS 4177.4-2004 |
| 2,500kg – 3,500kg | Two safety chains, rated to 3,500kg |
| Over 3,500kg | Two safety chains, steel with minimum 800 MPa breaking stress |
Tow Bar Capacity
The tow bar's rated load capacity must be at least equal to the loaded trailer mass — trailer tare weight plus vehicle weight plus fuel/fluids, not just the empty trailer's tare. This is the single most common mismatch on car trailers specifically, since the loaded weight is so much higher than the trailer's own tare.
Questions & Answers
What coupling do I need for a car trailer?
A 50mm ball hitch covers up to 3,500kg ATM loaded; a pintle hook extends that to 4,500kg ATM. Calculate against the full loaded weight (trailer plus vehicle), not just the trailer's empty tare.
How many safety chains does a car trailer need?
One AS 4177.4-2004 chain up to 2,500kg loaded ATM; two chains rated to 3,500kg between 2,500–3,500kg; two chains of minimum 800 MPa steel above 3,500kg — and a loaded car trailer reaches these brackets faster than most other trailer types.
Why does tow bar capacity matter more for car trailers?
Because the loaded weight (trailer tare plus a full vehicle) is so much higher than the trailer's own tare weight, it's easy to under-rate a tow bar by checking it against the wrong number. Always check tow bar capacity against the full loaded ATM.
